Bone Graft Q & A

What is bone graft orthodontics?

When a large amount of bone is lost, bone graft orthodontics may be an excellent solution. The procedure rejuvenates the area so that an implant can be set in place. During treatment, your provider lifts the gum tissue in the area affected by bone loss and puts grafted bone into place. The small stitches used after the procedure are dissolvable and should be completely gone within two weeks.

Why do I need bone graft orthodontics?

When your mouth suffers from bone loss, your teeth can become loose and eventually fall out due to the lack of support. If you’re losing your teeth or notice loose teeth, it could be due to bone loss.

Where does the bone graft come from?

The bone grafting material can come from a variety of sources, including

Autograft

Bone graft can come from your own body, usually the back of the jaw or the hip bone.

Allograft

Bone graft can come from a donor.

Xenograft

Bone graft can come from an animal. The most commonly used is bone from a cow.

Alloplast

Bone graft can come from synthetic material made in a lab.

The Arcadia Perio Care team and your orthodontist can help you decide which is the best option for you.

Why can’t implants happen at the same time as the bone graft?

During the Arcadia Perio Care portion of the procedure, your provider replaces bone in areas where it would be impossible to apply the implants at the same time. The area where the bone has been grafted needs time to heal. Then your orthodontist can perform their portion of the procedure to apply the implants and give you a beautiful and healthy smile.

What is it like after the procedure?

After the procedure, you won’t feel like yourself again until after the sedative wears off. Your provider may prescribe pain medication and you can expect to see some bruising. An ice pack and rest may help you recover. It’s important to listen to your body and let your provider know if you’re feeling any abnormal pain, as infections can occasionally occur.

The team at Arcadia Perio Care works hard to make sure each and everyone receives the best quality care available. They work with top orthodontists who are equally passionate about their patients and provide top-tier care.
